Catatan tertua tentang Pariaman ditemukan oleh Tomec Pires (1446-1524), seorang pelaut Portugis yang bekerja untuk kerajaan Portugis di Asia. Ia mencatat telah ada lalu lintas perdagangan antara India dengan Pariaman, Tiku, dan Barus.
Secara historis, Pariaman dikenal sebagai pusat pengembangan ajaran Islam yang tertua di pantai barat Sumatera. Salah seorang ulama yang terkenal seperti alm. Syekh Burhanuddin merupakan murid dari Khatib Sangko yang bermakam di Pulau Angso Duo yang sekarang dikenal dengan “kuburan panjang”.
Jauh sebelum kemerdekaan Indonesia diproklamirkan, pelaksanaan pendidikan bernuansa Islam telah berkembang di Pariaman.
Kota Pariaman merupakan wilayah pemekaran dari Kabupaten Padang Pariaman. Kota Pariaman memiliki kawasan pesisir yang terbentang dengan potensi perikanan dan pariwisata yang bernilai tinggi.
Dengan berkembangnya kegiatan perdagangan dan pariwisata, maka posisi Kota Pariaman sebagai pusat perdagangan hasil pertanian dan pariwisata pantai, akan menjadi semakin penting.
